Stephanie Hartpence
Multidisciplinary Artist & Designer
Hello! I live in Kansas City with my husband, our 3 year old daughter and our Boston Terrier. When I'm not designing emails or potty training our daughter, I'm at a ceramics studio learning how to throw on the wheel.
My artwork is primarily abstract paper collage. My process involves painting and drawing with a variety of media- ink, acrylics, pastels and colored pencil- and then creating layers of shapes and motifs. This is done by cutting up my paintings and drawings, and then I reassemble the pieces. I refer to the paper cutting as 'drawing with a knife'.
I like to incorporate pages of books from the thrift store. The retro and campy books influence the color palette in my work. I enjoy using discordant color combinations of bold hues, neons and earth tones.
I have shown work in Kansas City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. I pursued BFA studies in Sculpture at the San Francisco Art Institute from 2002 - 2006. In 2011, I attended Artist INC Live in Kansas City, a professional development program for artists. I then went back to school and received my AAS in Graphic Design from Johnson County Community College in 2017.
